Peschiera is 25 km far from Verona and in this town the emissary of the lake Garda, the river Mincio, flows out from the lake. The construction of the walled town of Peschiera, surrpunded by water has modified the natural flow of the river. In order to allow the defense of the city, three leaving points from the lake have been built, than they gather to south of the town. Thanks to its particular geographic position of connection between the alpine area and the Po plain, Peschiera has played in the course of the history a role of big importance.
The two main monuments, in fact, are both fruit of the military art: the Rocca, erected by Mastino II Della Scala, and the Palazzina del Comando del Presidio, famous above all because in its halls the war of 1915-18 found a turning point, after the defeat of Caporetto, with the decision to organize a new line of defense on the river Piave.
Only a couple of km away, in direction South, near the small lake of the Frassino, the Sanctuary of the Madonna del Frassino is worthy a visit: risen in 1511 in order to allow the people venerate the Vergine that have manifested, with the prodigiose disappearances and reappearances of a statue, its desire of having a place of cult in this area.
